In an effort to improve the share I`ve first of all been working on the forum layout which you can see in the image below. Please have a look and tell me your thoughts.

I think it`s an improvement, but I`m not the majority, so what do you think? What would you like to see added, changed or removed?

I`m looking forward to your feedback and making the share better, for everyone. smile.gif
GrofLuigi
I think it's better. smile.gif

Thanks for your replys guys, I think it`s less cluttered and easyer to scan and navigate quickly. what do you like specifically and is there anything you would change or like to see added?
Lance
Hello xable,

I really like the "new look" of the front page.
It is concise and clean, as I think that the initial page from every forum must be (easy to navigate).
But, what is the look of the subcategories?
For example: "Windows XP" -> "Subforums" -> "XP Hotfix Support Topics"
Will all the languages be together in the same page?

By the way, IMHO, this forum is mainly focused to list/make available Hotfixes, so I believe that a better arrangement would be:

QUOTE
Windows XP
XP Hotfix Support Topics (share, download and keep hotfixes up-to-date)

Subforums: Discussion and help with everything Windows XP related.

Thank you very much for all your efforts. wink.gif
Lance.

Hi Lance, Indeed the support topics are grouped by product instead of language, the download manager is still grouped by language.

I agree the main purpose of the share is to provide hotfixes, reasoning behind the support topics being in sub forums is they don`t get used. Out of 9255 support topics there are only 174 replys. Hopefully the main support forums will be a lot more active than that and the support topics being inside those may help make them more active too.

We could move the support topics into their own category, that would be another option.

I like your support topic description, will use that if you don`t mind.

Thanks for your feedback, keep it coming everyone smile.gif
GrofLuigi
What do I like > yes, less clutter it seems (I don't know the forum too well blush.gif , I have few bookmarks in the areas of most interest for me).

I too would like to see more discussion. For example, when I "addfile", sometimes I want to add my information or comment, but there is no field for that, and until the post is approved, I've already forgotten what I wanted to say it or it's too cumbersome for me to find the discussion topic...

Maybe they can be merged (the downloads and the discussion topics)? But I guess it would be too much work for the existing ones... And surely there must be a reason for this arrangement.

GL
xable
hmm, you can indeed add extra info to the file, not sure why you think you can`t. There are several ways to find support topics too so it shouldn`t be a problem. Their linked from the files download page and can also be found with a quick search for the KB number, there are also tabs in your profile showing your recent topics and file submissions plus links to show your complete topic/post history.

Perhaps we need more guides on how to use the forum software, it can be a bit overwhelming if your not familiar with it.

There is a comment system that appears on the same page as the files download page but it`s disabled because it`s not trackable, in that when a comment is posted there is no way of knowing it has been posted, making a discussion rather difficult. This may change soon though as the download manager software is due an overhaulgh by invision so maybe it can by used in the future. I`ll keep an eye on development and put in a feature request.

Thanks for your input GL, certainly a few things to improve there. wink.gif

OK. Now I understood the point. wink.gif

It would be an honor, my friend. biggrin.gif

Thanks again for this great forum.
Best wishes,

Of course, the main point is to get the site more active, otherwise it basicly faces closure. Which would be very sad indeed as far as I`m concerned. That`s the top and bottom of it. wink.gif

Hoping for some more feedback before I change anything, so if you can spare some time and have something to so please don`t be shy. smile.gif
GrofLuigi
That's very sad to hear, Xable.

I can't think of a way to incite discussion, seeing there already is a place to discuss... I guess that is the nature of the topic (of the entire forum). unsure.gif To discuss something, one would need to have experience with it, and until it's gathered, another one comes around... Also, I guess many people don't bother and let Windows Update do its job...

That would mean that the forum is maybe too specialized and would need to expand... but where to? huh.gif And wouldn't it clash with your other forum? blink.gif

For example, I could contribute by sharing my internal update list (for XP and Server2003 x86), but it might be of limited use for many people (I go for the highest *.dll version number regardless whether it's official or not, so that's different from most ULs I know, but I don't update some components I don't have use for). Also I'd need some more time (and help?) to properly format it, and currently I'm very busy at work... And seeing how some have lost interest in updating their update lists, I cannot guarantee it won't happen to me. But the benefit (for all interested) would be - more pairs of eyes and more chances to catch errors or misses. Or I could just list the numbers, so anyone interested could use it for any puposes...

GL
GrofLuigi
Another thing I could do, is make an illustrated Autoruns tutorial, since I know some of the components more than I see other people do, and can make some educated recommendations (of course, others would be welcome to correct me), but that would also require some time I don't currently have... sad.gif

GL
xable
I too am short of time GL sad.gif

OK, I think we`re thinking too hard now.. the main purpose of this thread is to get everyones thoughts on the new forum layout. As I don`t want to change it only to make it worse.

Everyone who has bothered to reply to this thread has said that it`s better, so I will go ahead and make the changes. We`ll see how it goes.

If you do see anything you`d like changed or added, like a new forum section or feature or anything else, let me know and I`ll see that it`s done. wink.gif

I`m exited about the future of the hotfix share, this is only the start of the improvements I have lined up and I will be working hard to bring them all in. smile.gif

Thanks for you input so far GrofLuigi, mirage, and Lance it`s been a big help.

I forget people often tell me I'm a pessimist... biggrin.gif

Is this because of the maintenance costs? Or free time? Maybe both?
I still remember the old times where the forum didn't exist… The "TXT" lists with the KB numbers and file versions… laugh.gif

I make the "GL's words", my own words. That's all I would like to say, but my English is poor. blush.gif

Anyway, a refresh in the layout is always a good start. "Who knows what the tide could bring? (Cast Away – Chuck Noland)" biggrin.gif
When do you intend to change the forum? Any foreseen date?

Best regards, wink.gif

Yes we have come a long way, after over 3 years it`s not quite the thriving community I envisaged though. I spend a lot of time each day on this site and it`s a ghost town most of the time. With both disposable time and money getting less and less these days, motivation is dwindling fast.

It is not to incite discussion but to just improve the share with help from the people who use it. If it`s not used and people don`t care if it exists then it may aswell not. btw I find your english fine. wink.gif

Thanks for your good work, and for being here for me!
I really appreciate people who try to make my life easier!

oops sorry GL, give me 9 hours and I`ll change it back wink.gif Glad you like it. smile.gif

Hello exit60, welcome to the hotfix share. glad you like it too. smile.gif

BTW the link to the old RSS feed has changed so you might want to update it if you made use of it. I`ll be adding more feeds later aswell.

Thanks guys.
Lance
Hello xable!
Too much work? laugh.gif
Well, let me tell you that you have done a very good job here!
The new layout is a lot better than the old one. Thanks. wink.gif

Now, I have some questions to you:

  1. The "Update Lists" Subforum (http://thehotfixshare.net/board/index.php?showforum=8) is empty, but it is taking you to another place (http://thehotfixshare.net/board/index.php?showtopic=91&view=getnewpost).
  2. The "Windows 7" Forum (http://thehotfixshare.net/board/index.php?showforum=11) is showing strangers [LOG] posts mentioned (linked) above.
  3. Do you think that it is interesting to publish a list with Office 2007 Hotfixes KB Numbers? I will not offer to upload the files because they are "giants" and my upload bandwidth is very weak. This would be like a "news flash". Appropriate?

Anyway, let's hope the things are going better in the future…
Regards,
Lance.

If you think that would be good go for it.

I`ve moved the Update Lists into the correct forum, thanks.
xable
The old update lists have been retired, their so out of date with old service pack updates it`s going to be a lot easyer to start fresh. I`ve kicked us off with a new XP SP3 list, feel free to add to it or start new lists. wink.gif

I`ve also been busy readying the site for a forum upgrade, here`s a sneaky peak.

Hope you like it smile.gif

Thanks for the "new XP SP3 list". It was a great idea! wink.gif
And I appreciated the new look. Are you using the same font?

Thanks, I hope it remains a good idea and people expand on it. I`d rather the communitiy have the oportunity to get involved rather than me create most of the threads like last time. wink.gif

Thanks, the new font it Georgia, though I have to confess I didn`t make the theme. It`s the new default look of IPB.
xable
btw the old update lists are in the archive forum incase anyone wants them for reference. smile.gif
