cgthamm
Do you support Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 machines? I do, and have found deploying hotfixes across my client base becoming time-consuming, not to mention tedious. During a recent discussion with a colleague, we decided to try and come up with "The Windows 6.1 Shortlist" -- the fewest number of hotfixes necessary to fix the most prevalent problems, that, if applied to all machines we service, would give the "biggest bang for the buck" in terms of freeing up our time to solve "real" problems, as opposed to those caused by bugs in Windows. We came up with 10 hotfixes that, when installed on all machines at a given site, have made a noticeable difference in both the stability and reliability of the computers there. Here they are: ----- The Windows 6.1 Shortlist (to be installed in order) 1. kb2619234-v2: A hotfix is available to enable the Association Cookie/GUID that is used by RPC over HTTP to also be used at the RPC layer in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2 This fixes Remote Procedure Call (RPC). This hotfix ABSOLUTELY MUST be applied before kb2615701-v2. 2. kb2615701-v2: "Logon Process Initialization Failure" error message and the logon process does not start in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 This fixes WinLogon. 3. kb2775511-v2: An enterprise hotfix rollup is available for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 This is a rollup of about 90 hotfixes, and fixes numerous bugs in Windows 6.1. 4. kb2728738-v3: You experience a long logon time when you try to log on to a Windows 7-based or a Windows Server 2008 R2-based client computer that uses roaming profiles This fixes the User Profile Service (profsvc), and is a post-requisite for kb2775511. 5. kb2732673-v4: "Delayed write failed" error message when .pst files are stored on a network file server that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 This fixes the Redirected Drive Buffering Subsystem (RDBSS), and is a post-requisite for kb2775511. 6. kb2601014-v2: You are prompted for credentials again when you try to access a network share on a device that is running Samba from a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer This fixes file sharing, and is a post-requisite for kb2775511. 7. kb2878378-v2: OpsMgr 2012 or OpsMgr 2007 R2 generates a "Heartbeat Failure" message and then goes into a greyed out state in Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 This fixes the Advanced Windows 32 Base API (Advapi32.dll). 8. kb2861819: Data transfer stops for five seconds in a Windows Socket-based application in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 This fixes Silly Window Syndrome. 9. kb3125574-v2: Convenience rollup update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 This rollup update contains almost all updates that were released after Service Pack 1 right through to April 2016. 10. kb3139923-v2: Windows installer (MSI) repair doesn't work when MSI package is installed on an HTTP share in Windows The original version of this update was included in kb3125574-v2, but it has since been updated to v2. ----- In my opinion, all Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 machines should have these hotfixes applied at the first opportune moment. They can all be downloaded from The Hotfix Share, except for number 10, which is available from the Microsoft Download Center. Are there individual hotfixes besides these that you believe should be deployed on all Windows 6.1 SP1-based machines because they resolve universal problems? Reply to this topic and let me know what they are. cgthamm Edited June 29, 2016 by cgthamm
