Cooldragon
Some months ago I 'caught' a nasty bug... it has caused me the loss of Word. I can no longer use the programme and have had to resort to Open Office which would not be my choice. Microsoft here in New Zealand denied the existence of any problem, even though the so-called Zero-day virus is known on the Internet. They also told me that even if they did know about it--which they didn't--there wouldn't be a solution for Office 97. I would dearly love to have Word back... I'm running Windows XP and Office 97. Can anyone suggest a fix? I've tried all the usual things: Unistallation, reinstalation (I have two versions of the progeamme and neither worked.) xable
Without specific error messages it`s very hard to help, it could ba anything. But I expect a clean install of your OS will do the trick.
shaz
Install Windows XP with the latest Service Pack 2. Use Windows Update to get uptodate with security and high priority updates and WHQL drivers. Install Office 97 with Office 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1) and Office 97 Service Release 2b (SR-2b) and all security updates released after Service Release 2b (SR-2b). Office 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=EN Office 97 Service Release 2b (SR-2b): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en Check here for all updates for Office 97: http://office.microsoft.com/search/redir.a...=CL100570421043 Latest update for Office 97 was in 11 november 2003. After this date no other (security) updates were released. And this might be a big security risk.
Cooldragon
There are no error messages. The pages just refuse to open into Word. Are you suggesting that I reinstall the OS as a solution? I think I'd need to be confident that that was a proven fix first. xable
Usually when office is broken and repair/reinstall fails you have no other options other than to reinstall. As a last ditch attempt if you really didn`t want to reinstall, you could make sure your system is clean from viruses and mallware and do a registry cleanup. For this I recomend: NOD32 - Unbeatable virus scanner Spybot - Mallware removal Ad-Aware - Mallware removal (between this and spybot not much can hide) jv16 Powertools - Reigistry fix and cleanup Otherwise a reinstall would definatly "fix" the problem because your reseting everything back to default. Just be sure to backup everything before you format your drive.
shaz
Clean install often solves problems if you can't figure it out. It may be a virus or a trojan that is blocking your Word. Install also an up-to-date Antivirus scanner. Edited August 28, 2007 by shaz
