  1. Hi, I thought I'd share my experience with hotfixes. Most of the systems I work with are XP, some Server 2003. Basically, I'm my own Windows Update Client. I always manually download and manually verify (unpack) hotfixes before installing. I make no difference between publicly available and private hotfixes. Usually, a bigger version number is better and the fixes from the previous updates are incorporated with it. I have never seen any difference performance-wise in day-to-day operation of the OS with private vs. public hotfixes, except for SOME shell32.dll updates (maybe they were something like debug builds?). But my systems are always well maintained, with up-to-date drivers and many of the Windows gunk stripped off (with nLite and/or Autoruns), so I doubt I would have seen any difference except if I hit the exact issue described in an individual hotfix (which I rarely do). But I think it's better to be safe than sorry - maybe I would have hit the issue if I haven't updated in time (when a fix has appeared)? I'll never know... On a live system, usually I wait until about a dozen hotfixes are collected, then I put them in one directory and run the following line (for XP): FOR %%c IN (*.exe) DO echo >>update.bat start /wait %%c /B:SP3QFE /norestart and run the resulting update.bat. Or I integrate with nLite. Either way, Windows has a nice feature that will not overvrite a file (.dll, .exe) with higher version number (only puts it in DLLCache), so that makes life easier in case of mistakes. If you run a bunch of hotfixes out of order, you'll still end up with highest version numbers, so this convinced me it's the right thing to do (to hunt for highest version number). I have no experience with Vista or Server 2008, but from what I read it's more complicated there. Maybe someone can share their experience? Anyway, good luck and happy hotfixing. GL

    Hello I`m xable...

...and I'm a hotfixaholic too... I can't stand the thought of a newer version of a file exists and I don't have it... Yeah I hunt biggest version numbers. GL
  5. Well, it seems there are many pages describing that error. From glancing through some of them, I can see other solutions that worked for some people. But maybe it's just burying yourself deeper in the mud... Here they are: 1. Something from Adobe. 2. This one says to download Visual C++ 2005 SP1 and/or Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 runtimes from Microsoft. 3. Another one says, among other, to clean up C:\windows\Prefetch folder. Myself, I would still try the suggestion from my previous post (I told you from experienc - I had it and solved it in the past with Photoshop). And then, there are still many other potential causes (virus/antivirus interfering, rogue codec, corrupted data file (the one you're working on), HDD error (bad sectors - run chkdsk...)) The list has no end. These things are hard to troubleshoot when you don't know the inner workings - just keep trying different solutions one by one until it works. GL
  6. Hi scoutsniper and welcome to the forum. One later version that I know of is in here WindowsXP-KB958817-x86-ENU.exe. (edit) - don't mind the description, there is later version of Msvcirt.dll inside. But I suspect something else. Hard to explain, but you could try deleting/renaming/moving all the dlls in the program's directory (in this case Elements) THAT HAVE SAME NAME AS SOME DLLS IN SYSTEM32 DIRECTORY. See more here. Adobe (and others) often include copies of system files (or VB... runtimes) in the package in case the target computer doesn't have them. If they are installed in system32, overwriting the OS's original dlls, that's known as Dll hell, and if they put them in their own directory, there are potential conflicts with mixed* versions... They can't win. Moderators: if this was offtopic, please move to another topic? GL * edit again - mixed because the same library (let's say msvcirt.dll) of another version build (with different/more/less functions) is already loaded in memory, which additionally may call/depend on other libraries (various builds)... hell indeed.

  11. The following Windows Server 2003 hotfixes exist on the board in x64 version, but not in x86: 948570 (if it exists in x86 version)? 945272 ... GL
  12. Does this replace the original Windows Script 5.7 release (don't have the KB number right now)? Files are about the same. Or: can it be slipstreamed into installation source without the original release? GL
  13. If I'm allowed to post comments on this (if not, mod - please delete): 1. This means that until now SMART didn't work on slave devices?! 2. Microsoft don't want to say slave. GL
  14. Is it the same as WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU_c81472f7eeea2eca421e116cd4c03e2300ebfde4.exe or should I download it again? GL
  15. @PACMAN Microsoft kb946026 is the latest mrxdav for XP I know of (XP Service Pack 2 needed). It is freely downloadable from that link. This might be offtopic here, but who am I to judge. GL
  16. They install in new branch in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP4 GL
  17. That's because the CD/DVD drive is like a computer on it's own. If there is a bad media inside or the drive itself is bad, it's taking its time trying to read it. Until it responds, your computer can't do much about it. I agree that some effort should be made to make that thread asynchronous, but that's the way it is (for now). GL
  18. kbupdate.info is a monitoring system that scans the entire Microsoft Knowledge Base every night. I hope this would be useful. GL
  19. PM sent. But, several visits later, everything is working OK. GL
  20. Odd thing is that sometimes it works (maybe mode linear or logging in with firefox helped)... I'm pretty sure it's my config, so please don't bother wasting your time on this - I was more hoping that someone would confirm this behaviour of Opera, but now I see what's the problem. As I said, I'll manage, but if someone else has the same problem, I will gladly cooperate in troubleshooting. For now, it's not worth it. Thank you again! GL
  21. Hi Xable, Thank you for your reply. No, I don't have &mode=threaded at the end. For example, this thread's link is http://thehotfixshare.net/board/index.php?showtopic=7322 . Oddly enough, if I add &mode=linear at the end, it works as it's supposed to (or as I expect it to). Since this is Opera with b0rked Javascript, I cannot be sure if it's an issue with just me, so I would like to hear if any other Opera user has problem with the forum. If not, leave it alone, I'll manage somehow. Great work on the whole forum, BTW. Greetings, GL
  22. Hi all, I haven't touched anything (nor could I) in the board layout (I mean the representation on my computer), but since the last upgrade (I think), all topics come out in weird layout - only the first post and below it tree view of the individual messages appear, so I have to click on each one to see it. I would like to restore the original (?) layout where all messages are visible at once. I know I could use the Options tab, but, the problem is, I use Opera and its javascript implementation is... how do I put it... nonstandard, and besides, I have some custom User Javascripts that I use that are absolutely necessary for me in other places. The point is, Opera's Javascript doesn't work here and I don't want to 'fix' it. FireFox works fine, but the forum doesn't 'remember' the changes for the next session. I would like to continue using Opera (and mind you, I use it on many other boards without problems). Also, I couldn't change skins (only 3.0 is available) and I wouldn't like to use Lo-Fi version. Any advice how could I restore full view? *Update - deleted custom javascripts - still doesn't work. Reinstaled Opera - same. Wiped out preferences/cache (physically deleted them from hdd) - yet no luck. GL
